It's not called the Garden City for nothing - Christchurch is the perfect picturesque backdrop for getting out and about in the fresh air this summer.

Walking dogs at the park. Walking and mountain-biking tracks can be explored at McLeans Island, located just 10 kilometres from the city at the Waimakariri River Regional Park. Open from 7am - 10pm, the park offers other activities including golf and horse-riding.

Bottle Lake Forest Park is another popular mountain biking and walking spot, located adjacent to the coast about 10km north east of central Christchurch. Choose your track depending on your ability and make a day of it.

If you want to stick to the city, Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens offer a range of activities, from walking and cycling to golf and canoeing down the Avon River. Celebrate the Garden's 150th Anniversary by dusting off your rollerblades and tennis rackets for some free outdoor fun.

Enjoy a great day at the beach with Kite Day on Sunday 27 January. Bring along your kite and take part in this stunning annual event of skill and colour.

A number of major sporting spectacles come to town this summer - and why just watch when you can compete? Test your mettle with State La Grande Swim at Akaroa on Saturday 23 February, Coffee Culture Le Race on Saturday 23 March and City 2 Surf on Sunday 24 March.

For something just as social but possibly a little more relaxing, try Yoga in the Park at the Botanic Gardens on Saturday 4 February.

If your dog needs some exercise too, head along to The Groynes, Victoria Park or one of the many parks around Christchurch and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
